Brighton Rock, the movie

Post by jbcollier »

Graham Greene's novel Brighton Rock was released as a movie in 2011 but only received limited release in the US and none at all in Canada. The novel was originally set in the 1930s and was a thinly cloaked religious metaphor set in a violent underworld. The movie is set in the mid-sixties and the young ne'er-do-well is also a member of a mod scooter gang. The religious elements have been removed and the story made into more of a modern film noir. The movie was well received by the New York Times and is now available to download on iTunes.

So far I have only watched the trailer and there are quite a few scooters featured.

Absolutely not suitable for children.

The main character, Pinkie, isn't actually a member of a scooter gang. But he does steal a scooter from outside a Brighton hotel ( a direct grab from Quadrophenia). I watched the movie a while back, as much for the scooter and Brighton visuals as for the fact that it's an adaptation of a Greene novel. The dialogue and plot is choppy but it really is a great film visually speaking. Extra points if you can recognize the common cast member between Brighton Rock and Quadrophenia!
Sip another rum and coke, told a dirty joke.
