Vespa Service Time
Am trying to assemble an order from Scooterwest, and want to make sure I have the right parts to complete the service I want to do, essentially, an oil change, replace rollers (belt was done not that long ago), and brake pads, front and rear.
Should I stick with the recommended 5W40 Synthetic, or...and how about the NKG plug? Iridium or plane jane? The variator nut says its a one-use (part number (436783) so I'm assuming I need one of these in order to do the rollers. I also will order some o rings for the oil drain plug as these, too, are one-use. The rollers are part number 842870.
Am I likely able to clean and re-use the air filter? Am I missing anything else? Your thoughts are welcome!

Don't skimp on the variator nut, I did (actually I was too impatient to wait for it to arrive) and it spun off...not a pleasant situation when you are out riding (happened to have some blue locktite so that got me home...not looking forward to changing my rollers the next time they are due though)
Depending on how long not long ago was, you may as well change the belt since you are in there
I re-used my air filter, just cleaned it up and lightly oiled it.
Not sure, but I thought the oil drain plug was one use only too (at least on my LX150) so you may want to order that too. I stuck with the 5W40 Synthetic.
I went with the NGK Iridium plug on mine, but again it's an LX150, so I am not really sure.

Just follow the service intervals outlined in the maintenance book (unless there is an issue). Order what is appropriate for the mileage covered.
It is very important to use a accurate torque wrench to tighten the variator (and other) driveline nut(s). Replacing them is nice but it's the toque that is critical.
It has to be fully synthetic oil. I recommend 0w-40 Mobil 1, available at any Canadian Tire. Yes the air filter is washable. New o-rings and crush washers is always a good idea.
Get an iridium plug if you are going NGK.
What service are you doing? Time for a valve adjust?

Thanks, both! John, its the 15K service. Part of the complication is that my warranty book says the same thing every 5K km - change the oil, etc. I've gone to the Wiki at Modern Vespa and even there, there are disparities about what to do when. Bottom line, I want to do rollers (I'm hearing do the belt anyways) brakes, oil and general go over. I will order all of the 'use once' items i need from SW, the oil from Cdn Bun.
John: valve adjust not so soon, you think?
In related news, I expect to have my VStrom sold by Monday (if the planets align), but that would clear the deck for....... another scoot?

You look (please & thank you) and see if you can see anything I'm missing. I placed the order already, but I can order again.

Rollers and slides get changed at 10K
Belt at 15K
Spark plug, valve clearance at 20K
Brake fluid and coolant every two years
The fluids you can pick up locally, actually, I have them all at my house. If the rollers and slides were not done at 10K, we should do those. No need to redo the belt.
What is your actual odometer reading?

The belt was just changed. We can hope the rollers and slides were done at 10K as recommended.
How is it running and driving?
If fine, then we should just do the recommended maintenance:
- oil and filter change
- brake and coolant flush
- clean air filters, etc.
Then do the rollers, slides, plug, valve clearances, etc at 20K.
Unless there is a driving issue!?

The rollers were not done when the belt was changed - tech at TG said the rollers were still in good shape then. Fluids haven't been changed out for a couple of years, so I agree that should be done as well. No driving issues as far as I'm aware. Cheers.jbcollier wrote:The belt was just changed.
