87 Postino.. help me get it going?

Post by scottyj »

Hello fellow scooter enthusiasts! I have an 87 125px 2 stroke Italian postal service Vespa that bogs down at high rpms and prefers to be roll started when it hasn't been running for a while. According to Alberta Cycle, it needs a new coil in the stater, but they are little help otherwise. I would love to be pointed in the right direction as far as where to acquire parts, as well as how to get her fixed up. Ideally, I'd like to learn how to do the work myself along the way. Full disclosure: she has not been ridden much at all the past few years, and has spent more than one winter outside, so I am sure that there is a good bit to be done.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Scott

Ps. I'd like to include a photo, but can't seem to figure it out.

The factory service manual can be found here:

http://scooterhelp.com/serial/service.VNX1T.VSX1T.html

There are fairly simple tests to see if the stator coils are ok or not.

Remove the carb and give it thorough cleaning, making sure every passage is clear. Blow out the jets (carefully, you don't want to launch them) and look through them to make sure they are clear.

Drain the tank and have a good look inside. If nasty, let me know and I can describe how to clean it. Refill with fresh fuel and mix.

Try it again

Parts can be bought at a variety of places:

I usually deal with this outfit:

Though it only makes sense for large orders.

We have workshops periodically but not much in the summer because we are busy riding.

I have a few Cdi boxes kicking around but it doesn't sound like that is your problem. I might have a source coil and pick-up but I'd have to dig for them. Do the resistance checks and let me know.

The magnets in the flywheel affect the readings so they might be a tad low -- IIRC.
