(EDIT) REPAIRED...My scooter is down...the kiss of death

Post by jgreeno »

It appears that the 'KISS' bike might be dead. I started it up on monday at lunch to ride home, and it stalled after about a block at the first set of lights. This is somewhat normal as my idle is set a little low when warming up. When I tried the electric start all it does is 1 small click noise, then nothing. I tried to kick start it but the kick start is completely jammed up. It won't move an inch.

I initially though it was a bad battery, replaced it to no avail. I am trailering it to Top Gear tomorrow to get the prognosis.

I am somewhat fearful that the engine has seized, as I hear that even small exhaust leaks in 2-strokes are the kiss of death (no pun intended.) I did install my own aftermarket exhaust and it seemed ok at the time, but I am no mechanic.

Hopefully I can get this resolved before the weekend activities, as I would hate to miss out on the remainder of the riding season.

Carb Jets

Post by jgreeno »

The carb jet, rollers, springs, variator, and exhaust was all done at the same time. It worked perfect for about 1 month (800km or so.) I did the Calgary rally with it as well.

That sucks James. Hopefully it's a quick fix and not to pricey...

I say scrap the Vespa and buy a Yamaha.
No offence to Vespa but that new stuff is always breaking down it seems.

Yamaha

Ya, I looked at Yamaha's before, but they are really to small for me. I am a tall guy, and I look like a giant on those....too bad because they look sharp.

Let's not throw out the baby with the bath water just yet. Did you keep your standard top end? If so, you can reinstall it if the news is bad.

Hopping up is not without its perils. Here's hoping the news is not too bad.

The olny modding that was done was the muffler, rollers, upjetting and variator. I will find out tomorrow (thursday) what chris at top gear thinks is wrong.

I thought your bike had a 70 cc kit on it.

No, I decided against the 70cc kit. My bike goes 78 to 85km depending on how it feels that day, so I did'nt think the added cost and shorter life that comes with the kit would be worth going 90kmph.

Boy I hope they can get it going, as I have been really satisified with its performance to date.

KISS is back! So.....the problem was the electric start and clutch. Tony at Top Gear had to completely pull my scoot apart and found that the electric start was not passing power correctly AND he was able to repair it (rather than replace it) saving me over $400 in parts. I also needed a new clutch as it had seized and a new battery as it died somewhere along the process. So my total bill was less than originally thought (thank heavens).

See you all this Saturday for the east meets west rally.

Great news! The stock top ends are usually pretty bullet proof so I would have been surprised if it was seized.

Really? Just changed out the original drive belt on my '07 250GTS; at 15,000 km. And I only did so because I felt guilty that I hadn't done anything nice for it this year. Last major expense: last year when I put a new rear tire on. The front shows no wear at all. It's never given me an ounce of trouble, despite my best efforts to drive like a hooligan whenever possible. Yeah, and I'm still on the original brake pads... YMMV, of course.

Uh John..you actually have to use your brakes occasionally to wear out things like front tires and brake pads. They never wear out if they never touch the ground. Just sayin.

Oh, and good to hear about the ET James. Not really surprised about the e-start. I have burned one pinion and the second is noisy. But I am surprised about the clutch. It is usually a very solid part of a very solid bike.
