Steering Column... and a few other Q's

Post by GregD »

Hey Everyone, I'm new to Scootering and just purchase a '78 150 Super - it needs a bit o-love to pass the out of province (got it from Sask. where it was registered and ridden). It was missing some bits in the front (speedo cable, brakes need some work, ect). Igor came and gave the bike a look over, noticed that the wheel didn't have a stop in one direction but otherwise thought it to be in decent condition... I was taking a look at the horn, and pulled it off and noticed a crack in the casing on the steering column. I took it apart and found this... It doesn't appear to have cracked the bar, only the casing... is it as bad as it looks? Do I/ Should I get a new one?

Image

I also need to get some turn signals, it doesn't look like the bike ever had any(?) Igor suggested The Bar Ends from SIP. It looks like they're small frame(?) only, how do I know which ones to get? (as there are a few, and no measurements)

As well, I don't have my Class 6, any suggestions for a place to take a class from?

and not to ramble, The Super doesn't look 'normal'.. it has a trapezoid head, checking online it looks like it could be a VBC Euro Spec MK2?

It wouldn't be too hard to repair your fork if you brought me the fork and the fender, I could repair the fender mount.

You'll need to have both steering stops. What's up there? Body or fork problem?

If you don't want permanent signals, then cobble something together from cheap signals (Parts Canada/Motovan, available from any local shop) and remove them after the OPI.

Otherwise, Hella bar ends would work but are not simple to fit.

Can't help you with the model as I am a small framer.

Heard mostly good things about the Alberta Safety Council courses.

The steer stop is on the side has a bit cracked off, you can see it in the pic, just before where the bearings sit, that hump... it jagged, the other side is squared. They make contact with a small bar in on the inside of the scooter (up near the horn insert). The bar inside the the bike (that the column makes contact with) look fine, no cracks or dents.

When you talk about the fender mount I assume that's the part that is "gone" on the bottom right of the pic?

I just had a closer lok at the photo. The fork has a crack going up the fork from the broken mount. It's done, time to get another.

Where is this other crack you see?

I gave the fork to a welder friend to inspect, See what he can see. He's pretty sure it's just that aluminum casing (or magnesium?). Apparently there are dif. grades of aluminum, some easier to weld than others. He's going to give it a closer look this afternoon/evening and let me know.

I'm prepared (after seeing this) to get a new one, always better to be safe than sorry (especially since there are 'only' two tires).

If I get a new one, I assume I have to specify that it's 10" inch wheels? The conversions been done, and I assume the only conversion is done through the steering column (and rear wheel mounting(?)).

Yup, the alloy casing over the steel fork has cracked. The only reason for this is that the steel fork underneath has been "moved." In other words, the fork has been bent.
