I'm wondering if I don't register the Derbi, will it be a big hassle to register it in the future. I'm keeping it insured, at least for storage, but I haven't been riding it for about a year now and it seems kind of silly to keep it registered if it is just sitting there.

Not in my experience. Once it has been registered in Alberta, you are fine.
Insurance can be different, they may decide scooters or sport motorcycles are not something they want to provide coverage for. Leaving you to find insurance with another insurance provider.
My insurer for example will not insure sport bikes. Not surprised why!

Yes, letting your registration lapse is not a big deal, unless you drive it unregistered or you have it parked on the street unregistered.
Insurance is critical in that you must always have something insured. Even a short period of not insuring anything can mean that you start from scratch, that is, pay huge premiums until you build up a new safe driving record.

Thanks for the info. Luckily my FIT and Derbi fit in my parking spot in our parking lot and Tiki has her own storage in the covered bike lock up. So I don't have to worry about having it insured on the street.

What I learned last year, is that if you let registration lapse more than 3 months, they have to verify your ownership. My plates expire in October, and I'll be jiggled to renew over the winter, (now that there's 3), so I save a few bucks.
AMA had to do some song and dance to verify ownership for me - which probably isn't hard since I've renewed annually for years, there is a history, but if you don't use AMA there could be some interesting hoops.
