Upgrade for PX125E

Post by SebringMike »

Folks,
Having dismantled our PX125E yesterday, and considering the advice from jbcollier, I'm contemplating upgrading the engine on the scooter.

I've searched the web for upgrade kits, and I'm kinda at a loss for how to proceed.
I'm thinking that a full top end rebuild kit is the way to go... hopefully 200cc.
EDIT: maybe 200cc is too much to ask without additional hardware (carbs, exhaust, crank etc). Perhaps 150-170cc is more realistic?

Malossi have a 150? kit (http://www.malossiusaonline.com/Vintage ... 314093.htm) for $335USD.

SIP have an LML kit (http://www.sip-scootershop.com/en/produ ... r_24161700) for $160CAD, plus I need to purchase the cylinder head (approx. $100?).

I've also seen full upgrade kits for $750 (includes exhaust and carbs I think).

There seems to be a large variance in the price of the kits, and also clarity of information available on them.

So I guess I'm looking for the easy way out by asking what you folks have used in the past. Good experiences versus bad etc. Expected $. Bang-for-buck.

Thanks,
Mike

I think the stock 125 might be boarder line on the slow side.

If your after cheap. then i think the LML 150, head, gaskets etc might be the most economical way to go.

Might want to take a look at the DR177 or even the iron polini 177 for a couple bucks more. Grab a 24/24 carb as your first upgrade, then down the road an exhaust and WEEEEHEEEE. This will last a lifetime and take a shit ton of abuse.

If you need a clutch then look at the full kit package that was around $700.

Ok, this is for your 14 year old daughter. You don't want fast. You want safe. Not really looking for top end, just a fatter bottom end to get through that gap in traffic. If it will hold 80ish kph, that's more than enough for riding in the city.

So forget carbs and pipes. Just a simple, quality, bolt-on kit.

My recommendation would be for the base Polini 177 kit. It's not that expensive and it is simply plug and play. All you have to do is reset the timing and lightly port the cases.

Also, leave the gearing alone. The stock 4th gear is a bit of an overdrive that means you often have to shift into 3rd for hills and headwinds. Sticking with the stock 125 primary gears gives you an ideal city scoot with no need to shift down for most hills: much more pleasant to ride.

You do need a new exhaust though as yours is all full of carbon and crap. Stick with a stock replacement for quietness and good bottom end:
