Oil leak over rear shocks?

Post by LibertineAudrey »

Ok, so the P200 has been leaking little bits of oil for a couple of weeks now (since I changed the gearbox oil, actually...or that's when it was first noticed, at least). Logically, I assumed it was directly from that, so I cleaned up the bolt where the oil drains from, pulled it and put it back in, and left a towel underneath to see if anything was still leaking.

Well, there is oil still leaking, but it is now obvious to me that it is not coming from the gearbox drain, or anything in that immediate area. Instead it appears to be coming from about half way up my rear shock, runs down the entire length of it (and absolutely coats the entire thing in mucky black oily goo) and then drips nonchalantly onto the garage floor.

Where's this coming from, how much of a concern is it, and what can I potentially do to change it?

Cheers,
Audrey

It is not the actual shock that is leaking is it?

It might be coming from the exhaust and blowing onto the shock.

I don't think it's the actual shock, no. The oil only starts half way up the springy part, the upper half is dry. It leaks more after being ridden, which makes sense I suppose. Nothing seems to be working improperly, or at least any different than when I first started riding it. The oil only drips onto the floor on the right side of the scooter, very close to the rear tire.

It seems pretty...non-vital, but in the interests of learning about these things, I thought I would ask.

Let's have a look at it next time it's in town.
