Alberta Regulation Change on July 1, 2009 for Scooters

Post by jgreeno »

Many of you are aware of this change, but I thought to share on the open forum the contents of an email I received from Alberta Transport in regards to the changes that took effect as of July 1, 2009 with the regulations in Alberta pertaining to scooters.

Basically, Alberta aligned with the federal regulations on point to reflect as follows:

A moped scooter is defined as a vehicle with 50 cc or smaller engine or a limited-speed motorcycle (LSM) - [definition to follow]. If your scooter meets this criteria the operating requirements are:

Minimum Class 7 driver's licence required
Minimum driving age is 14
Insurance and registration required
Motorcycle helmet required

The new Alberta definition of Limited-Speed Motorcycle (aka Scooter):

· Electric motor or propelled by an engine that has a
displacement of not more than 50 cubic centimetres

· Top speed of 70 km/h (old regs said top speed could be no more than 50km)

· No weight restrictions (old regs said weight had to be between 35kg and 55kg - that's gone now)

· Minimum seat height of 650 mm

To find out if your vehicle is a LSM you will have to check the vehicle's compliance label. This label is typically located on the frame of the vehicle and will denote a vehicle type; a vehicle type of LSM will mean your vehicle is a moped, but a type of MC for open motorcycle will mean your vehicle is still a motorcycle.

If you are unable to locate a label you will have to contact the manufacturer to determine what a specific model is classified as. 50cc Vespas are considered LSM's and therefore you don't need a Class 6 license.

I hope this is of assistance to anyone interested in acquiring a small scooter or currently owning one!

It is important to remember that if you modify the scoot so it is no longer an LSM (up capacity or circumvent speed limiters) and you are involved in a accident, your insurance may be null and void. You would also qualify for a hefty fine.

Good Point.
