Doing acid 101

Post by jbcollier »

The PO had chromed parts that weren't meant to be chromed so I had to remove it. I checked on the web and found a home brew recipe for the job.

Three or so quarts of water plus a couple of cups of muriatic acid (always add acid to water, never water to acid). Use jumper cables from a 12v battery. Negative to a multiple copper or SS conductors into the solution. Hook up the positive to the part and dip it in!

Messy, smelly and nasty don't go half in describing the resulting reaction but it works. I processed the heck out of it until I figured out that what I thought were the last remaining bits of chrome were casting flashings. What can I say? Good looking but not too bright.

Here's photo before the house went up in flames:

Only for steel or brass. No aluminium alloys!
