Last "Good" ride of the year

Post by coyoteran »

It hit 12 degrees today so the wife and I took a spin on the ET. Great day for a ride with very little traffic (for a Saturday) Went down to the local scooter dealer to drop a dime on parts. Boots for the stand, 4th hand tool, rear shock, glove box lock all for the P. Waiting on a complete cable set and am contemplating getting a replacement looking glass for the oil reservoir.

Rear shock installed with a little coaxing while the boots and glove box lock were a breeze. The cool part is I also fixed my electrical problem, which wasn't really an electrical problem. I was getting 18vac out of the stator but nothing out of the regufier. Turns out that is a red herring. It won't output 12Vdc into a noload condition (similar to my old suzuki) so it looks like it's dead. I completely dissassembled the headset and took out the ignition swith to verify the correct pins were shorting when the key turned. They weren't. The key turn was also very aneamic. Seemed to be not far enough. Took out the key barrel and wouldn't you know it. Only 2 of the 4 tumblers were releasing with the key inserted. Wrong key for the lock set. A little judicious filing and voila. Still needs the keys that I have and you can't start it with a screwdriver.

The reason the bike was starting at all with the crappy key is the switch would turn just enough to remove the ground from the ignition cct but not enough to connect the 12vdc ccts and indicator light ccts. Wired it all back up, fired it up and got a steady 13.5vdc at running rpms and everything worked with the exception of a couple of burned out bulbs and a horn that is desperate need of replacement. Lucky I kept the one from the ET.

So, cables and brakes are all thats left and it looks like I will have a long(ish) cold(ish) winter to work on them.

And I know that I am preaching to the choir a bit here but...if you don't have a motorcyle lift GET ONE. Even with raising and lowering it every 20 minutes, this afternoons work took half the time it normally would.

Keep em shiny folks.

Ok, so maybe it wasn't the last ride of the year. 7 C today. Roads all melted from last weeks snow so I drove the yeti to work today. Hey, you guys are still riding right? Right?

On another note, the theme bike is on hold. Got crushed with some nasty expenses so until the bank account climbs back up, servicability is the key, cool paint job and cleanup are secondary.

Keep em shiny folks.

Good news about the electrical! Lots of people complain about the North America spec P and 100 sport electrics but I like the system. It's nice to have a bright taillight and signals at idle.

Sure, I was riding last night, in my dreams!
