Vespa Maintenance

Post by TRON »

Hi everyone,

My apologies if this topic is covered elsewhere. (I looked through several topics and didn't find this one.)

I have an '07 Vespa LX150 (baby blue and yellow). I enjoy riding it and my Big Ruckus, but I couldn't tell you the first thing about servicing scooters. The Vespa is at 1400 km and hasn't been serviced yet. Now that Top Gear is closed, I am wondering if anybody out there knows of a place or a person in Edmonton that can do the maintenance on it. Things like oil changes, tune-ups, tire replacements, etc. Any help would be appreciated - thanks!!

Yes, very sad that Top Gear has closed  Alberta Cycle will be looking after sales and service for Vespa. They are in the process of getting set-up and may or may not be ready. Alberta Cycle is located @ 12505-97st. Ph.# 780 477-3525 This weekend looks to be warm, think about joining us for a ride on Sunday. Check the chit chat forum for time and place, hope to see you :D

Vespa Maintenance

Post by TRON »

Hi David,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I noticed on kijiji that Alberta Cycle is looking for a motorcycle mechanic. I wonder if they're looking for someone who is familiar with Vespas.

Anyway, a couple of other questions related to scooter maintenance in general:

1. Do you know if the CCSC does workshops on scooter maintenance from time to time? Do you

2. What are some reputable mechanics in town? I brought my Honda Big Ruckus into Scona Cycle for the first time - they good?

In terms of rides, I'd love to join you but Sundays are one of the few days when I am not available! Does the club ride on other days?

Thanks for all your help.

It is my understanding that Alberta Cycle will be or already has sent their mechanics for training to qualify them to service Vespas. Oil changes are fairly easy on the LX and I would be happy to assist you, when time permits. I,m not sure where you can get an oil filter, but start with Alberta Cycle. I have never dealt with Scona Cycle, but they have been around a very long time. Too bad that Sunday is not good for you, though we have entertained riding on a week night maybe Tuesday or Wednesday. Possibly meeting at Luzzara 10011-82ave. (next to Top Gear) and riding from there. Check the posts for ride time and place starting in May??? or when it stops snowing  :? Hope to see you out.

Scona Cycle has a very good rep as does Cycle Works.

We do have repair workshops from time to time. This spring we overhauled a friend from Red Deer's engine (P150). I will be also doing a "workshop" on Shannon's Piaggio Fly which has the same engine as the Vespa ET/LX150. Watch the forum for day and times. Unfortunately for you, it is usually on a Sunday as that is when I am free.

*cough* Derbi Boulevard *cough* , but yes similar engine to LX 150. I think they might even be the same engine, but I could be wrong.

As for oil filters, I just ordered mine from ScooterWest in the states. Here is the link for their website: http://www.scooterwest.com/users?logout=true

They have been good to me in the past for various bits and bobs, but the shipping fees are a killer for small packages.

Tomaito-tomaato. Two sides of the same coin. But yes they do have the same Leader 4t engine. Some of the emissions control stuff is newer but you just put that back where it came from and you should be good.

Just .02 from an ET4 rider with 35000 km on the bike. This manaul is a good place to start. Most of the work can be done with simple tools. Anything you do with the cvt may require you get a couple of special tools to hold the clutch and flywheel. These are a good investment and you can get them from scooterwest. Also, if you do any work on the cvt, buy some spare one-use nuts for the front pulley. Money well spent. Take this from somebody who didn't spend the money up front and spent a pile to fix that error.

Best of luck with the bike.

Vespa Maintenance

So has anyone taken their scoot to Alberta Cycle yet? I was wondering how they are doing so far on the Vespa service side of things. Mine is due for a service soon.

Just called yesterday to see if I could order in a part. I was told by the rep, that they just got set up last week, have nothing in stock and haven't been trained yet. The rep I talked to didn't really know what I was talking about when I asked about my scooter and a body part I'm looking for. According to them they are only dealing in with Vespa and Piaggio models only. The rep was really unsure which models of Vespa and Piaggio they were dealing with.

Go to Red Deer or Calgary for Vespa service?

Post by Macgyyver »

Has anyone heard if it's a decent idea to haul the Vespa somewhere else for service?

Paul is looking for Factory service I think - I don't know what all that entails. Guess I'll look at the book when I see him at lunch!

Paul wasn't sure what was needed. His is an 07 LX150(?) I'll try to dig up the manual later on.

We were just wondering if it was worth it to haul it to Red Deer or Calgary for service too…

What are the kilometres on the scoot? If it is just minor servicing, I can do that for Paul and stamp the book with my shop's stamp.
