Back in the saddle after a shoot out with real Indians

Post by jbcollier »

The D is up and running (... well, almost, more anon). I have been tussling with it spitting back and four stroking above a certain rpm. I could get rid of it by leaning the carb right out but that's no different from shutting off the fuel. Neither of which gets you where you want to go. A chance (lucky) conversation with Jae put me on the straight and narrow. He mentioned his difficulties with his Indian ignition system on his Lambretta causing very similar symptoms to what I was experiencing.

As some of you may remember, my D now sports an Li crank and a modified magneto flange to suit. Part of the conversion is a SIL electronic kit! The darn thing only sparked once or twice when I initially set the timing and then I had to replace the pick-up to get it to spark again. The fact it ran fine at idle and moderate rpm had me thinking it had to the carb.

I should have remembered how many times, fuelling problems have turned out to be ignition problems.

I ordered a Varitronic kit for an Li and a Varitronic coil in a period suitable bakelite housing. Once they came, the fun started. I had to "significantly" modify the new stator plate to fit and time correctly: lots of cutting and filing. I finally got it in and timed correctly and then revved it up. It pulled cleanly! Albeit on the choke, more anon. Woo hoo! I then revved it three or four times and the coil broke!

Sigh.

I have it jury rigged right now but I'll have to fab up a custom coil bracket to suit. Still, it works.

Now anon has arrived. I have been messing about with the jetting for quite a while. One of the first things I did was swap needles. I now need the original needle and I can't remember where I put the damn thing!!

Signing off to go digging in the parts bin...

Oh, I forgot to say, "THANKS JAE!"

Close, thank you kindly. I have an order of new needles and needle jets holed up in customs in Vancouver. Hopefully they will be released soon. I also have a another regulator coming for the Varitronic system as it popped all my bulbs while I was revving and grinning. Double checked the hook up and that's all fine.

It's a wee bit aggravating to be so close but stuck waiting for parts yet again.

The custom exhaust is amazing!!!! Just the right mix of Modern mixed with the classic lines of the D. Although you missed out on some summer riding due to the wait, in my eyes it was well worth the wait.....I guess it's easy for me to say eh?
